Spotlight #1: Frank, Chief Futurist and Visionary Inventor

Frank’s 5 Ws

  • Who: Frank Maggiore
  • What: Director of Strategy, Key Account CSM, and Chief Futurist, Apprentice
  • When: Frank’s coming up on his 5th year at Apprentice
  • Where: The Maggiores hail from Stony Brook, NY
  • Why: Frank’s talent for AR is legendary, and his enthusiasm is contagious. He makes us all better at what we do by inspiring us to bring a childlike wonder for science into our work!
“I have been working on Augmented Reality for more than 17 years and within the pharmaceutical industry for more than 25 years. I am the inventor of Single-use Biological 3D Printing, 3D printing within sterilizable bioreactors/mixing containers, Single-use robotics, the Variable Augmented Reality Marker, as well as a method of Contactless Communications for secure cloud network computing where IoT devices can securely work with smart glasses, smartphones, or other mobile devices.

My real passion is working on and developing disruptive technologies, rapidly building functional prototypes, and determining how they apply to various industries.”

Q&A with Frank Maggiore

‍What motivates you? Helping people and figuring out how new technologies can assist people further.

What’s your work superpower? Finding out-of-the-box solutions to solve real-world problems. Like using aerogel thin-films to block heat transfer from smart glasses to an operator’s head or using flash reflective paints to find hidden transparent glass vials using the flash of a camera. 

What’s your non-work superpower? I like to cook innovative meals. I am as much of a scientist in the kitchen as I am in the lab.

How do you spend your free time? Reading to my daughter, working on the house, listening to Radiolab podcasts, watching TED talks, tinkering with various technology projects and finding time to write patents.

Where do you like to travel? I have traveled to 28 countries so far and have a goal of traveling to 50 countries by the time I am 50 years old. My wife and I like traveling all across Europe for the history, the culture, the food, and the wonderfully friendly people.

Spotlight #2: Like Father, Like Daughter: Meet Sophia the Inventor!

  • Who: Sophia Maggiore
  • What: Published Patent Owner
  • When: First patent published on 2/11/22
  • Where: The Maggiores hail from Stony Brook, NY
  • Why: Did we mention Sophia had her first patent published at 11 years old?? With that record, she’s on track to discover a new theory of relativity at 26 like Einstein!
“My 11-year-old daughter Sophia had her first patent published today. She has always been a picky eater and came up with an invention of locked compartments that unlock only after you finish all the food in the previous compartment.

This gamifies the way kids experience eating food, where they are rewarded with a snack or virtual prizes (like Robux) after they complete their meal with healthy eating habits. So maybe after Apprentice I’ll be working for her one day!”

Q&A with Sophia Maggiore

‍What motivates you? Using my imagination and creativity to make something new. 

What’s your academic superpower? Talking to everyone and socializing to collect new ideas.

What’s your non-academic superpower? Eating chicken nuggies. 

When you’re not busting out patents, how do you spend your free time? I like hanging out with my friends, playing Roblox on my iPad, watching Harry Potter on loop (I am a Slytherin), and sleeping late on weekends. 

Where do you like to travel? I love traveling to Hawaii but I would really like to get a chance to visit Japan where I can eat ramen, sushi, mochi and where all things are kawaii.

When she’s not inventing, Sophia likes to spend her free time traveling and spending quality time with her family.
